Speakers?

Having an amp or speaker issue.

Just went from an audiobahn amp to a Xenon 200.4, benched at 938 RMS. Installed it, turned it up, and distortion is clear. So, I go in back, drop sensitivity, re-raise HU volume, distortion around same volume. Rinse, repeat. Same thing. The problem is that my Alpine Type-r's don't sound much louder on an extra 130 watts, they just seem to distort, whereas my MMC525's in the rear, the tweets woke up but the mids are smaller, so they lacked the midbass punch.

Is it the speaker or the amp?

Settings: All speakers HPF = 80hz, NO bass boost, voltages stay consistent between 13.7-13.9 at idle.

Not whatsoever, it is either just blatant clipping or speaker limitations. I know ALL about noisy amps haha, I've had my experience. It almost sounds like clipping, but it's more of a speaker flapping noise than just distortion/clipping.

When it makes the noise, it sounds like the surround is hitting the doorcard/plastic, but it does it even when I pull the doorcard completely clear. So I'm thinking it is speaker X-max being reached?

Have you set the gains with a DMM to a very low output, say about 30-50wpc to see if the speakers still exhibit this behavior?
I just did set my speakers, 20 volts front, 18 volts rear. (100 and 80 watts rms respectively)

It helped ALOT. Apparently, the Xenon amps are REAL sensitive in the 80%-90% turned area, which is where I needed to tune too. In fact, the sensitivity of the knob is soo much, that when I pressed down on the knob, it raised or lowered my voltage by 1 to 2 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

So, The speakers are world louder than when in clipped form, and they sound clean up until they start hitting their design limits. (which is about 100 RMS dynamic for the Type-R's)

Now all I have to do is put a spacer on my rings because the surround is hitting my doorcards //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

Awesome, glad it worked out for you. Those Xenon amps are killer. Wish I could have found an X100.4 and an X400.1 for sale when I was in the market.

Good luck on the X100.4. IMPOSSIBLE to find. Heck, I only have the 200.4 because the only 100.4 I found was 20$ cheaper, and the X200.4 was a much better buy.

Now that I have the amp working right, time to invest in some RSD component sets //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

Now THAT you'll have to tell me how they work out! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
