Soundproofing Materials

long story short: Science fair coming up and my plan is to simulate a room and soundproof it with 3 different materials, and test the resulting db's in relation to each type of material. I plan on making a big enclosure with 3 compartments. One with the battery and amp, one with the speakers built into the wall facing into the last compartment which will contain a cheap db meter for relative usage. My issue is finding 3 different insulating materials to test in the wall panes I'll be using for holding the insulation during testing.

cliffs of the cliffs: ofcourse there's cotton fiber for insulating rooms with but I need atleast 2 other materials usually used for soundproofing. anyone know of some?

Closed Cell Foam (CCF) and conventional aluminum backed butyl rubber. They do sell special foam to do recording studios with. IMO if you'r trying to accounstically deaden at 20hz or 200hz, or 2000hz, different strategies will prove more useful than others depending on frequencies you're testing. Do a test every half octav or so for more accurate results.

I don't remember where, but I've heard of liquid being used for sound proofing lol. May sound kinda dumb, but I don't remember where I heard that.

Would make a very interesting science fair exhibit if it worked.

The thing about this is what kind of testing you are doing.. mic placement etc..

how are you going to measure sound deadening? keeping sound out or in? if you could explain this better it may help..

sound deadening a room will kill resonance/decibel levels but you will have better sound reproduction..

if you are simulating a room are you simulating vaulted ceilings flat ceilings? the ratio of cone area : Room space since this is a small box is going to be a big deal and will probably make the testing results minuscule.. limited sound proofing to cone area.. if you get what I am saying.. also different materials will do better or worse for different frequencies so if you get a cheapo decibel meter that does not show frequencies across the board you are not looking at this correctly..

It really appears like you are trying to lower decibels in a room with the speakers in it with different materials which is not really a good thing or even something to look at.. People sound deaden rooms to keep resonance down(unwanted spikes in certain frequencies aswell), keep unwanted noise out, and keep the sound from leaving the room

good thinking. I guess to put it simply I am just gonna test its ability to keep unwanted noise out. Flat ceilings as well. I was gonna just play like a 1khz tone with no deadener; record db's then see the difference with each different material. But now i see that maybe I need to try different frequencies as well. or keep the material constant and change the frequencies played.
