sony headunit ipod hookup help...

i have an older sony headunit but it was a good one for its time.... it has the red and white plugs in the back but when i pluged the wire with a headphone jack on the other side into it for my ipod it isnt doing anything.. i dont see anything that says aux. or anything but i figured it has to be able to work or else they wouldnt be there?!?!.... if anyone knows what i can do to get it to work please let me know..
