Sony Components w/ ribbon tweeter

Well I was looking around at a local audio shop, since I got a gift certificate to them for my bday today, and I was looking for some new components. Nothing too crazy, I don't want to spend $500 on Rainbows, not that they carried them anyway....

Basically all they carried that was good were Boston speakers, but they manager actually recommended some brand new Sony components for me. I don't know the model number, but they weren't xplod, and they sounded really nice. They were a copper color, and had a ribbon tweeter, and the xover had a tab you could move to attenuate the tweeter a little bit if it was too bright. I would only need to spend $100 of my own money to pick them up with the gift certificate, I just wanted some opinions on these before I decided to buy them.

Does anybody know anything about them? I can't seem to locate them online anywhere including sony's website. Opinions/reviews are appreciated.

Well I did find them online for $199, but the MSRP is $399, they said they would let me have them at the shop for $299 even though they are marked on the wall as $399.

Sure I could do better online, but I'm limited to what they have since half of the money is coming from a gift certificate. I don't think I'm getting a bad deal or a really good deal, but in the end I only have to spend about $100 of my own money to get a really solid set of components, so I'm happy.

I most just wondered if anybody had ever used these before and what they thought of them, since the name Sony is like taboo around here.

Who cares what the name is, every company has high end stuff and low end stuff. pioneer makes low end junk, and they make high end stuff too. same with kicker, alpine, mtx, etc. Have you tested out many speakers? The best way to see how it compares is listen to a few different sets of higher end speakers and not pay attention to brand. Do you plan on amplifying these cause that will make a huge difference.

They will be getting 60W RMS, and yes I tested a bunch of speakers. That's how I narrowed it down to the Boston's and those. They had a big switchboard with all the components set up with xovers visible and a head unit. They let me run out to my car and put a bunch of music on a usb key and blast it in the shop. Actually they want to hire me as an installer, but they can't afford to take on another person, hopefully they say I can work at least temporarily in the summer when they get more business.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback, I'll be sure to post some info on the installation. It'll be interesting to mount the ribbon tweet since I have stock round tweeters at the base of my a-pillars.

I'm going to fiberglass over the stock mounting location for the woofer so I can use the sony grilles because I think they look really nice and the stock ones are ugly. Ribbon tweets are going low on the a-pillars just above where the factory tweeters are mounted.

I'll be deadening and installing these at the same time. I'm at least going to deaden the front doors, the trunk will be my next priority, everything else will just depend on what I can afford. Most of my current lack of sound quality stems mostly from low grade equipment and a lack of good quality music on my computer. Once I have decent equipment, that will motivate me to go through and weed out all the shitty quality MP3s and get my CD player working so I can actually play CDs. Also I desperately need to build a new subwoofer box, I'm thinking about doing some crazy ambitious fiberglass project where I make a big trunk enclosure that holds my woofer, both amps, and the PC. Current I have a decent amp rack I made for my monoblock, the 4-channel on the back of one of the seats, the PC is just in a carpeted MDF box and a prefab ported box that is falling apart. Oh and in case you didn't get the hint from before, I use a carpc as my headunit.
