Something loose in the dustcap?

Got 'Roids?
I have a 12'' Fi BL that's fully loaded, and after installing it on my new MD3D, I noticed a wierd popping noise coming from the dustcap. I took the sub out of the box, and the noise is alot more prominent. I checked the spider and made sure the coil didn't come loose, and it's all intact. The only thing I can think of is maybe some CA glue rattled apart, and is loose in the dustcap. Anyone else have this problem before?

Also the sub is not bottoming out, it starts to happen at low-mid volume, and doesn't go away until the volume is turned down to like 20/62.

Cliffs: Rattling sound in dustcap, no signs of broken soft parts, can anyone help?

the coil is probably rubbing, a friend of mine had the same thing happen to his dd 9518,..he took some sand paper to it and it was fine, but if you dont know what you are doing dont take it apart sent it back to fi and they should fix it:) hope i helped

el oh el.

win.

Coil isn't rubbing. I took the sub out of the box and listened to every part of the sub for 15-20 minutes, I narrowed it down to the dustcap, It sounds like maybe some CA glue rattled off and is loose.... Just a guess though, but how do you think I can fix it without sending it to Fi? I was thinking remove the dustcap, and order a new one.

So your friend took sandpaper to a coil? He scraped all the glue of the coil in that spot, I don't think that's a wise choice.

I have received a JL w3 10 for repair with the same symptoms. Upon close inspection during test tone sweeps I could here it was part of the plastic dust cap had came unglued and was rattling against the cone. Carefully removing the dust cap and reglueing it down fixed the sub.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Because they solder the tinsels and vc wires together and lay them down around the vc former top and lay a bead of ca glue over them so they don't move. I suspect a piece has come loose and I'll have to do what you did.

Hmm. Don't know much about DD, never had the monies; Besides they make some killer subs and amps.

Um wow. That's pretty sad.

take the sub back out and see if you can hear anything under the dustcap. I know you said you did it already but maybe tip it upside down or shake it and see if you hear anything loose.

You'll probalby just have to take the dustcap off and order a new one

I was thinking I should have did that when I had the sub out, but I thought maybe it would get stuck somewhere inside and I'd be forced to tear the sub apart. But I think my guess is right, I'll try to PM Nick and see what he thinks I should do. But thanks for your guys' input and help!
