Some belt under my hood is screaming when I turn up my system loud..

if it was the alternator or water pump it woudl do it no matter what time of day you were starting it.

if the bearings were going bad they are going bad they do not wait until things are damp/cold.

Also the load on the alternator can draw as much as 5hp so if the belt had a little grease OR it was not tight enough it will squeel like that. My fatehrs van the battery kept slowly dieing, thoguht it was the alternator. Turns out it was the belt was bad and when the alternator needed to create more current the belt woudl slip.

actually I had a water pump that only squealed at low RPMs when it was cold... on a honda

stop calling it an alty lawl.

get a new alternator for christ sake.

what kid of amplifiers are you using?

one reason it may be happening at night (aside from temperature) is becasue you prolly have your headlights on, and they can draw up from 10~20 amps, and that puts your alt over the limit.

I doubt that is a belt, it's either a water pump or your alt pulley.... what kind of car?
Little Mazda 323 ... my trucks have no problem dealing with the current //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I've noticed that it usually happens more often when it is warmer out - not super how nor super cold, somewhere in the middle ... if temperature makes some sort of difference.

the same exact thing happened to me... I'd get out of the driveway and gunn it... at very high RPM's it would go away and once the car warmed up.... it was a waterpump... it's more of a loud squelch than a squeak...

Any solution/fix ... new waterpump? Doesn't happen too often, but it's enough to bug me when it does happen.

yah I got a waterpump/timing belt done and it was fixed....

a good mechanic could diagnose it in about 10 seconds by the sound... belts and pulleys sound different... then just find which item is making the sound...

I was at some random guys house that was a friend of my uncles... he's a crazy old coot but an awsome mechanic (he rebuilt a Jaguar V12 on his own, without prior knowledge)... he diagnosed it in a 2 seconds just by the sound...

Awesome thanks guys. And thanks ss3079 you was leading my problem to a solution. Only thing it doe's this only at nights and most of the time when I start up my car I hear a quick squeal from that thing under the engine. I drive an Mazda MX-3.. My amplifier is a Orion 1200D. The rpm doe's lower as the mystery belt squeals. Highly doubt it's the alternator because I have an Optima Redtop under my hood, Big three upgrades. Oh and I really like your avatar AcidicDreams //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif that is so cool the cat's eyes looks so evil. Just like rat eyes.

I think they are some kind of fox... I can't remember now... in any case how many miles has it been since you've done a timing belt??

is it a squeal or a screach

I'm still thinking it's your water pump...

I would expect the RPM's drop because when it's making noise the pulley is dragging and the engine doesn't like that...

I forgot to mention that my stock battery got killed.. That's the reason why I switched to the redtop.. Yeah AcidicDreams I just have to get the belts checked out.... siiiiiiiiigh it is so disgusting maintaining an old car. Thanks for your guys help though weee! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif.

some thing that you can try if the car has more then one belt. get the belt screaming and get a squirt bottle with water in it and spraya little bit of water on one belt at a time and listen for when the screaming stops. and look to see which belt it is. but if the car is a newer car with only one belt then this would not work.. but if you have a older car/truck with 2 or more belts then i would try this and it will tell you if it is water pump or alt.
