hold the iron on the opposite side of where you are applying the solder....the heat will draw the solder into and through the (braided) wire ensuring proper electrical as well as mechanical connection...
some other things you want to do is have a wet towel or cloth on hand to clean the tip before and after soldering...and tinning (lightly coating the tip of the gun or iron) with solder to ensure good heat transfer.
