soldering irons

wtf... evereyone i get works awesome for the first few seconds and dies offits still working but wayyyy below melting point

what kind of soldering irons/guns do you guys recomend
I have an adjustable Weller pencil iron on the bench and a 200W gun.

Works fine for what I do, but then again, I don't mess with SMD stuff either //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

cheapo from radio shack and a cheapo from walmart. 2yrs strong on radio shack and 6 months on walmart. though they dont get a lot of use. Keep your tips clean also.

What kind do you hvae that won't heatup well?

I use different things for different applications.

1) On the bench soldering: Weller solder gun with changeable tips.... awesome for on the bench work... The tips vary for different applications but sometimes make soldering really much easier than a traditional iron.... Downside is its FN bulky and annoying to hold at angles for an extended period of time.

2) In the car: I use a traditional soldering iron. Dont know the name, buts its my "old faithful" type of tool that I actually scored from my father years ago. I estimate it to be 20+ years old. Its much more maneuverable than a weller 'gun' style

3) Heavy or large wire soldering: I use a propane or oxyacetaline torch.... a bench vise, channel locks and copious amounts of flux. Downsides.... no open flame in cars = damage claim central... plus a lot of dripping hot solder to ruin shit.
