Back when I was a kid, we didn't have fancy-schmancy cassette deck tape players and boom-box sub-woofers. If we wanted to hear a song we had to sing it. And if you wanted bottom octave, you'd better hope one of your buddies sang bass.

The closest thing we ever had to an SPL competition was a hollerin' contest.

Okay, so I'm not that old.

I used to "dabble" in car audio. And by dabble, I mean spend about half of my disposable income on it. I was a hopeless addict.

But I found a cure. And by cure, I mean a girlfriend who sucks the life, blood and money out of me. If you think your subs are loud, catch your old lady on the rag some time and explain to her that the pair of lumps on her chest are a sign from God Almighty that she should do the dishes and laundry...

I digress.

So anyway, I've got some extra cash and this 91 Honda CRX that I had originally purchased in 2004 with full intention of installing a competition audio system in. I have a 220A hand-built alternator and a yellow top, as well as welding leads in place of the old ground/power wires, and the battery was relocated to the trunk *(big 3)*

I have only one love as far as amplifiers go: Audio Art. If you've ever seen one, they look like generic crap...but if you've ever owned one, you'd know that they're about the best thing since sliced bologna (especially if you have an alternator that can maintain 14.4v //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif). Can you still buy these? Anybody have a working used one (or better yet a pair)? 50HC, 100HC, etc.

I'm too old for comps. I'm too deaf for 8's. I gotta have something, however, because the ******* kids across the street think they've got loud stereos. I cannot be bested by a bunch of **** teenagers who don't even know what a Digital Designs woofer is...I would like, if possible, just loud enough to set their car alarms off every morning as I leave for work, as they have done mine for the past year. Also, shaking things off their living room wall and causing emotional damage to the cat would be good.

I've always been a fan of single 15 or 12 setups (especially considering the amount of usable space in a CRX without walling it off). I was, at one point, a semi-pro box builder, so that's not a problem either. Just toss out some ideas.

Last time I logged in here (old name is LoneRanger) the big rage was ED, SI, Adaire and some punks from Las Vegas that called themselves "RE". So what are the new names I should be researching? What's changed since 2004? Who's left of the names I mentioned? I plan on doing a bunch of reading on here to catch up, so it's not like I'm trying to cheat and make you guys repeat everything for my benefit, just sorta figured I'd introduce myself and maybe get a litttle jump start...

Anyway, I appreciate any and all responses.

Actually, Re has made a big name for themselves. They make great subwoofers such as the xxx. At the moment Fi audio and tc sounds subwoofers are all the rage. Well that's all that comes to mind.

It shouldnt be that hard getting loud in a CRX.... If it was me I would look into DD/AQ subs and Sundown Audio amps.

What's FI's story? Did they make subs under a different name? Do they have some sort of affiliation with another existing company?

I kinda figured that Adaire would fold sooner or later, but in their hayday the Brahma was something to behold. When I was building boxes, about 90% of the orders I filled were for Brahmas, SI Magnums, RE XXXs and RE MT's...

How about Incriminator? Are they still around? They came out about the time that I decided to give it up...

Is XBL2 still alive and well, or are there bigger and better things these days?

Incriminator is still alive and, apparently, well. XBL2 is still around, although i do not, personally see it used much anymore. TC sounds has LMT/LMS tech out, but their woofers cost ALOT of money (3k retail for the lms5400..). And re has dual coil i think it is.. out on the new XXX's..

Yeah, lots of new brands have popped up. All of which I think have a 2-initial moniker (no kidding). But yeah, RE sold out, and Fi has pretty much completely taken over as the new moofer craze. I went to a competition a few weeks ago and I felt like a weirdo because I wasn't running Fi. Ascendant Audio disappeared for a while, and has finally reappeared, after joining forces with Fi.

I know what you're thinking by now... Fi, Fi Fi, Fi, Fi, Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

But yeah RE has the new XXX out, which is quite the monstrosity, and since the disappearance of Adire and the selling out of RE, XBL^2 is pretty much dead. I can't think of anyone who currently produces any XBL moofers. And if you look around, demand for the pre-06 XXX's is getting strong, because they are such nice subs.

TC Sounds was chuggin along and earning quite the following, and then they decided to pull the 'we are restructuring' card and double their prices. So in the meantime, they've pretty much fallen off the map. Rumor has it that they've done this since they lost Eclipse as an OEM customer.

eD is still a bunch of queers. They have an online TV show on iSux, now, where you can watch the clusterfucking.

DD has a bastard child now, named Audioque. I run one of their subs and its quite nice.

Lookin for budget stuff, ehhhhhhhhhh? Well up thar in Winnipeg, rumor has it that there's a Canadian idiot practically giving away subs through a company named Mach 5 Audio. Rumor also has it that he likes to pay forum members to take pics of themselves with peanut butter and jelly on their nipples.

Currently, incriminator is pissing everyone off because they're dangling the new Death Penalty over everyone's heads but won't release pics. bastards. But yeah, they are still alive and well.

If you were around for the whole TCAB thing, Mark Potts is still a douche. Most people would like to see him wrap his turbo yaris around a tree, and then see the tree proceed to **** him.

And that's all the nooz i can think of.

So now that I'm up on the new brands I should be watching, I wonder which forum members are still around....

I used to do business with a guy named Alex from FL. If I remember correctly, his nickname on here was BiaBia. He made a lot of boxes for me when I was too busy to fill the orders. Awesome guy, awesome work.

Rangerman aka Dustin was another one that I had a lot of respect for. Always trying to talk me into doing a blow-thru in my old ranger...

I heard somewhere that BigFatHead aka BigBassMan aka Lloyd had a kid and got out of the game completely...Hard to imagine winning that may state champs and just calling it quits.

NGSM13 was the king of complicated boxes. I'm sure he's earned an honorary bachelors of physics by now.

Gauntlet is probably still post-whoring it up...if not here, somewhere else. I drove a box all the way to Cleveland for him, only to find out that it wouldn't fit in his trunk.

There are a ton I'm forgetting, so don't be offended if you're still lurking and I left you out. If you pipe up, I'm sure i can think of a smartass comment for you, too.
