So I Called Jl...

I also know now that I no longer rely on a mic to tune my car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
The only time would be for judging and they face the mic forward.

You see, your ears arent directional like a microphone is. No matter what the manufacture states (omni-directional my ***). You are judged by ear not my mic. The shape of your ear alone precieves how you hear things. These type things a mic can not pick up. I was simply pointing out that for SQ judging witht he mic facing forward how it would be, you would want to retune so you dont lose points.

However you have your vehicle setup I cant not comment. If it sounds good to you that is all that should matter. Turning the mic wont help you though. Mic forward for RTA judging and your ears for everything else.

best bet...do what I do. Find the cars that the judges like the most and go sit in them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif never hurts to hear what the judges like to hear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
I really just did the RTA thing to find nuances in my car. Not really to tune. I try to get it flat and then tune. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

The mic forward vs. side was for experiment as well.

SO I called back today to try and find the Fs of the tweeter. He said fs does not apply to the tweeter? He said I could go lower than 4.8 k if I had a steeper slope. But he wouldn't really say how low. So I am still wondering if:

I can wire the mids to channels 1-4 bridged and then wire the tweeters to 5 and 6 in stereo? Are the wattages safe as long as I keep the gain low?

So there is no set or correct way to match the volume of the mid to the tweet other then by ear?

And I should use 10k tone for both the mid and the tweet gain setting?

Edit: What active crossover do you use?

Power handling is very much affected by the HP filter settings you use.
Yeah I've got amps the hp filter on them now at 110...anything lower and they distort at high volume.

I find that Odd though, because they told me they don't roll off the low end on the woofer.

Just set the gain by ear using 10k tone but make sure to set the x-over at about 5k just in case.

Then with play with x-over until you get audible distortion.

I'm using the alpine h701 processor.

The passive crossover doesn't roll off the low end on the woofer, they expect you to use them with an active high pass for the system. He also wasn't just talking about the system as a whole but the tweeters individually also.

So could I find the fs myself? I'm guessing I'd need an oscope and or tone generator? It's the frequency at which the tweeter is loudest correct?
It'll be hard to find if unless you were involved with the engineering of he tweeter or you can get the T/S Parms from JL (which, for some stupid reason, they are reluctant to give out). I'd call them back and ask them for the tweeter Fs, nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah everytime I call I confirm the info they gave me last time. So far they have given me the same answer every time which is good that they are not just pulling a number out of their ***. But I think I will call again and ask them for the tweeter Fs or should I ask for the resonant frequency? I hope they don't have caller id lol.

Yeah call them back and ask specifically for the tweeter Fs. That info shouldn't be so hard to obtain, but for some reason they seem reluctant to provide it.

Were they able to tell you what the Fs of each tweeter is? And if they say 4.8 kHz, you could very well get away with a much lower frequency when using a tighter crossover slope since most manufacturers give their rating with a -12 dB/Oct slope.
The Memphis 16-XO3 has -18 dB/Oct slopes for the band and high passes, so I would venture to say you could set it somewhere between 3.6 to 4.0 kHz and be just fine.
So if they rated it at a -12dB/Oct slope and I used a higher slope I could go lower...hmm.
