So does this sound right?

So my good buddy has installed speakers, etc. for a living before and knows a lot on the subject matter. I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla and my back two speakers had been blown for about a year or so, so i realized I wanted some really great speakers. So i told my buddy i want some great speakers and gave him a 400 dollar budget. He wound up recommending me Alpine speakers and went ahead and purchased and installed the following:

Alpine SPR-69C (300 watts peak, 100 watts RMS)

Alpine SPR-13S (Component 2-way speaker system 300 watts peak 100 watts rms)

So he installed everything, and upon listening to it we both realized that the back speakers are far more loud than the front speakers. Just to let everyone know I still have my factory head unit/receiver/cd player. In addition, when I try and play something somewhat loud I hear some muffling noises from the front speakers. I mean kinda like they are a little blown or something...I don't know.

My buddy says its just distortion because I have a factory receiver and that if I really wanna listen to stuff loud I will have to buy head unit/cd player/receiver.

Does all of this sound right? I just feel after spending 400 bucks my ears should be in heaven right now. I have no problem spending another 150 on an alpine receiver and getting that ipod cable if it truly will make the difference

if i were you...i'd get rid of the rear speakers, amp the front componants and then think about maybe putting some small subs in the rear deck like the JL Audio 6w0's or the tang band 6"s. Possibly build a small box for each sub.

im really not wanting to get subs, im not in high school (not meaning for this to sound mean) I just want my music to sound crisp and great. How much would amping them cost?
well if you are using 6x9'' on a factory deck then you really have no idea what crisp and clean sounds like. if you had some very nice comps amped up front and some nice mellow subs in the rear deck...well lets say if you liked the way 6x9"s and coax's sound then you'd be humpin my leg after i installed comps and some mellow bass in your car.

it goes to show that theres a big myth about subwoofers having to rattle the shit out of everything.

i really know nothing about car audio....are you saying what my buddy bought for me and installed was not the best move given my $400 budget? If not how can i change it cheaply.

i'm saying that most people have no idea what a really nice stereo can sound like....and you don't have to spend thousands to get it. And for $400 yeah, you could have done alot better.

ugh....my buddy said he has this website he uses that gets him deals on speakers, etc. I guess I should have investigated more. How much would amping the front speakers cost?
let me look up some amps for you......don't feel too bad about the money you already spent, by the time most people come here to research it themselves...its too late, money is already gone.

this one would good for all 4 of your speakers

or if you just want the fronts amped i like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ALPINE-MRP-F250-4-2-Channel-Amp-Amplifier-250-New-07_W0QQitemZ140146757924QQihZ004QQcategoryZ39732QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

honestly....your choices on small amps are endless

I think your buddy made some money off of you, but thats ok we now you can make him install your amp for free. You could always get a more efficient speaker and not amp them, type r's unamped is a bad combo

Your soundstage should be in front of you, not behind you. The front speakers should eb the strongest, by far, with the rear speakers only reinforcing what the fronts are doing. Right now, you've set your system up to do just the opposite, which is why you are experiencing the problems you are.
