My HU is ghetto installed. It's a single din and it's sitting sidewayz and a bit stuck out, because the cars stock HU was some wierd one and a half din freakin' whatever. Of course as a result of this, it moves around, and when it does, I hear crackling coming from the speakers.

What causes this specifically?

The HU is connected to the cars stock infinity amp via a harness.

Harness wires not soldered or crimped correctly (loose connections on harness install). Pull out the deck and check how the harness was wired. All connections should be crimped, soldered or both.

I remember a couple years ago when I put in the after market HU, I twisted the bare copper strands together and then wrapped them tight with electrical tape. That should have been good enough. I'll have to see what is going on in there tomorrow.

get a dash kit for it and do it right
I did use a dash kit. There's just too much space for that single din HU. I may have to make a custom rack to put the HU into, then insert it into the dash.
