well I have been posting lots about achieving more bass than more current setup. I have 2 12" Infinity Perfect ported in a 3.4cu 33hz enclosure. They are being powered by a PPI PCX2200 amp that is 800 watts x 1 bridged at 4 ohm. Everything has been working fine, but I have noticed somewhat of a decrease in how my subs have been hItting lately. Everything is wired perfect. The subs are dual 4 ohm individually seried and then both are ran parrallel to the amp to get a 4 ohm load. So everything is all good. We did turn up to the gain to a little over half on the amp 2 weeks ago with success, although it did blow my current 80 amp fuse so we put in a 100 amp fuse in its place. All has been good until today...I was letting the subs pound today and doing some experimenting, but nothing that crazy. Then all of a sudden they just turned off. I thought I maybe burned out another fuse or that the amp shutdown. I open my trunk and am choked by SMOKE!! Smoke is coming out hard out of my port on my box. It smells really burnt. I look at the amp and touch it. Its hot as hell but the power green light is still on. Although, it is somewhat flickering in the smallest way(if that makes sense)...WHAT JUST HAPPENED!!!!???????????

you tried to get more output the lazy way. i remember your other thread. build a bigger box and tune a little lower with those subs. i believe that was my recommendation if i remember right.

I blew them!!!!! yes!!!!! now I have an excuse to get new equipment, hehe!! No, seriously I am not trying to be a jackas* few questions though....

1.)So what do you guys mean by "getting louder the real way now"???

2.) Yes when we blew the fuse we put in a new and bigger fuse in. This was under the advice of my installer. Was that not good??

3.) What do you mean that I tried to get more power the "LAZY" way?? by putting my gain up??

4.) Lastly my subs are rated to handle 400rms so do you think my subs blew just because of too much power to them or because my gain was producing too much clipped power??

you guys rock! thanks for the quick replies

You just learned how not to set your gains, the hard way. The only question now is, will you learn from this mistake and do it correctly the next time.

Sorry about your failure. Good luck with your next setup.

edit: do a search for "clipping" and you should get all the info you need.

lol smoke coming out of your port and you ask why?!
fail.
I figured they blew, but just needed to hear it from the experts. My main question is was it because my subs couldn't handle the power and were getting old(5 years old)... or because the amp was sending such clipped power...anyone???

eddie

haha "experts" where? not many people on this forum are EXPERTS. buffs maybe and maybe know enough but unless they have installer certs or something credible ... can't call em experts really...

I'm pretty good with dampener but i'm not an expert lol

Age would generally hurt the speaker's suspension, the soft moving parts. What happened to your sub(s) is a voice coil melted. Simple physics, too much current through the wire with too little cooling. Melted wire and smoke out your port.
And yes, clipping causes a drastic increase in power, resulting in the melted coil syndrome.
