small sealed enclosure VS large sealed enclosure.

ok, so i was looking at upgrading my HT sub to 2 8" subs in ported enclosures. but i was going through my garage today and found 2 old pioneer bookshelf speakers(relative term) they have 10" subs and 4" mid/highs in them. i pulled out the mids/highs and was left with 2 no name woofers with a decent ammount of excursion. the only identification on the enclosure was a warning label that said "do not exceed 50W maximum power" i am trying to read the numbers on the magnet but i cant make out any of it yet since it is stamped into the baseplate and it seems to have been rubbed off.

anyways the enclosures are ported but when i hooked them up they sounded REALLY boomy being played as just subs. so i rolled up a rag and stuffed it into each enclosures port. they sound a good bit better, but still not that great. since they are going to be used for HT i would like to get more low end out of them while cleaning up the sound. my first thought was polyfil, but im not sure on this one since ported enclosures are usually larger than a comparable sealed one. but from what i understand smaller sealed enclosures need more power and sound "tighter" while larger ones use less power and get lower.

any suggestions asside from building a new box? if i build a box i will go ported and just tune to 25hz for HT use. but i would like to skip the box building process alltogether.

Without driver T/S specs you are just guessing. So I will guess too, I guess... Anyway, The woofers you have are most likely very high Q. Unless you go to a huge box, (and then they will not handle much power then) You are not going to get much bass. Sounds like you need a subwoofer, not what you have.

Those speakers were probably not built with pure bass in mind. Also a sealed box has to be completely sealed, that would help sound. Those two things being said I don't think you're gonna get decent sounding, for HT at least. Rumbling lows and all that

well actually they are subs. i just got s reply from pioneer and they didnt give me t/s specs but told me that their RMS is 50W(under rated), they are 8 Ohm, and they should be ran in a ported box for best results. im going to keep digging and see what i can find on them. i have them hooked up right now and after messing with my receivers EQ settings i have managed to get lot of the "boomy-ness" out. turns out my sub channel was playing up to 250hz. i am working on getting some T/S parameters for the pair of them so i can make a propper box or at least know what im dealing with.

simple question, would a larger sealed box help them play lower/make them less boomy? this is just a general idea, not driver specific.

Matt

oh and the box is completley sealed. the mids/highs were in a seperate "enclosure" inside the box.

A sealed box will typically always sound less boomy, naturally they have a 2nd order drop off where as ported is 4th order. I've built an oversized sealed box for an idmax and tried it at home. It sounded really good but just didn't get loud as I wanted

In a sealed box to small for the driver you will have a bump in the response before roll off. Normally around 100-200 Hz. This frequency would depend on the driver.

For T/S specs the easiest way is to use LIMP. It is shareware that comes as park of ARTA. I use it with great results. Google will give you lots of info on it. But if you still have questions, I'll try to answer them.
