Skar 12's vs Sundown SA 12's for SQ

Which of these subs have the ability to produce better sound quality? Do they produce better in sealed or ported boxes? I don't listen to music most of the time TOO loud, but still like to really bump once in a while, but I like great sound all of the time (obviously).

Both subs are very capable of a high level of low distortion output.

With the Skar-12 you have a little more linear x-max -- with the SA-12 you have additional attention to inductive distortions.

Give and take a bit.

****, you own sundown?! Thanks a lot for the response!

I'm very new to this part of car audio, pretty much everything I know is what you see in all of the car audio shops around town (tons of alpine, JL, rockford, kicker etc.) I recently sold my only sub and amp and wanted to start from scratch. I will either buy a Skar or Sundown sub.

Do you think you could briefly describe what linear x-max is?

The definition that we use for linear excursion is 70% BL -- which is 10% THD in terms of BL distortion. Often defined as the threshold of audibility in sub-bass distortion.

Either driver is a good choice.

Do you prefer these subs in sealed or ported boxes? Ported seems to be the more popular opinion. Also do you have any 200 or 250 range amps that match up well with either one?

Most folks run them ported for the most output -- I am a sealed guy myself outside of SPL competitions in most of my installs designed for daily listening... I've had SA-10s and 12s sealed in my car and really enjoyed them. Both the SA-12 and Skar-12 will do well in sealed.

I don't have an amp in that price range at this time.

Ok great, I think I'll get the Skar VVX 12.

One final question for you... in my local shop today I was talking about different box options with the worker and he was telling me ported boxes are bad for subwoofers in the long run. I haven't been able to find any truth to this. Is it true to your knowledge??

No it's not true... not with a properly designed box and properly adjusted amplifier.

OP they are both great subs and I think you will be happy with both but it comes down to what kind of music you like to listen to. Skars do great when it comes to low end. SA's can get low as well but skars have the advantage.
