Simple wiring question

I am installing my amp and sub for the first time. My simple question is does the sub need to be connected to the HU and the amp or just the amp. I saw a diagram and it was connected to the HU but I wasnt sure if it was just speakers. So the sub to the amp and the HU or just the amp???

Also one more thing I forgot, the kit I got came with ground and fuse distribution blocks. Do I need to use these if i am only hooking up one sub??

no you dont need them. Is it a 4 gauge kit im guessing? if so, just make sure the 4 gauge will go into the amp. But you do still fuse the power wire about a foot off the battery
