Show me an inner dustcap

A couple people have told me that the problem with my pair of HC's might be an inner dustcap issue.

Never seen a pic of an inner dustcap, and Im not particularly fond of the idea of cutting my subs up to see if thats what it is........anyone got any pics of one?

Im hoping that when I see a pic, I can figure out a way to determine if thats definitely what the problem is.

Im not going to be able to see it, am I?

Someone give me a list of how to know if you have a problem with it.

makes a weird rattling/clicking/vibratting style noise from both the momentum and air pressure against it (traveling through the pole vent)

if it fell completely off it would rattle/make noise all the time pretty much as long as the sub was moving.

in the video you posted (what i am going by) it sounds like the sub is vibrating as soon as the volume is turned up, not necessariyl when the sub reaches full excursion OR retractin into the motor structure.

Compare the noise of a loose inner dustcap to the sound of bottoming out for me.

Sorry for all the questions, Ive never had this problem before, cant get it figured out.

bottoming out would be more of a constant noise only happening when the sub is in full retraction. It woudl not happen all the time like yours seems to be doing.

Tinsel slap would also be less frequent then the "buzzing/rattling" that yours seems too do.

Mine only happens when its wanging nicely.

At lower volumes it doesnt do it.

But someone at RE told me the HC's cant bottom out? So I dont know WTF is happening.

could be misaligned, tinsel slap

hate to say it but this is what my fugged up MT did //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

had to rip it apart and do over

did the HC's even have the inner dustcap

exactly at lower volumes the former is moving less air and is moving less so it does not have the momentum to make the dustcap come free from the former surface.

When it starts to move alot ther eis air force and alot more momentum.

Take a sharp knife, start at the outside of the dustcap and slowly pry it off the surround. One you get it started keep going around the outside and you will be VERY surprised how easy it iwll come off.

Unless you tear the surround then this will not harm the sub in anyway, only need some goop or speaker glue to glue the dustcap back on.

Also the sub isnt much good how it is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

tinsel slap is more of a "tick" sound.. not a "buzz" style sound .... if it was going "tick tick tick" then i would vote for tinsels

Glue the surround back on? You mean the dustcap back on? Im confused.

dustcap back on sorry about that.

overal unless you go at it tearing wiht a big knife you iwll not harm it. just be careful and go slow and it will work out fine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have taken the full cone dustcap off before and the only way you can tell there was one on there is the fact that there is glue/residue left on it.

Due to the dustcap being relativly smooth ont he back side the "glue" cannot form a overly strong bond to the more porous surround.

what setup are you running

i have my 12" HC in 3.6@29, cant make it bottom out

tho in 1.25 sealed, played a 40hz tone, it bottomed but it looked like it was moving at least 2" peak to peak

i believe its Xmech is 31mm one way, so sounds about right

Pair of hc 12"s in 3.6 (yeah, for the pair) powered by an IA 20.1 at .5

Ill PM you a link to the video, maybe you can see if it looks like what yours was doing?

Your single hc is in 3.6? Is that what RE recommends? I havent been able to get a straight answer on that.
