Hey guys, I have to do a senior project in order to graduate college.

One idea I had was to build a rotary subwoofer. I have to do some more research on them, but they seem pretty cool and would probably make a good senior project.

What do you guys think? Any ideas/comments?

I think it'd make a hell of a project. I'd definitely check out DIYAudio, I remember some posts a while back about big servo-controlled things, but I'm sure someone there knows more about rotaries.

I thought about building one from scratch. I'm not exactly sure how they're built, I'll have to look more into it.

If I could say I built my own subwoofers, I'd be a happy man.

EDIT: maybe reverse engineer the Fi SSD's I'm getting with a triple stack motor or something.

Mechanical Engineering? Nice, I'm thinking about majoring in this as well. What school are you at?

You might want to check out the Phoenix Gold cyclone, that is one of the few rotary subs that were ever sold I believe.

Maybe you could build the magnet out of a few coils of that flexible magnet stuff?
I really have no Idea if that would work just an idea.

Thats a pretty good idea. Or I could build the voice coil itself outa that flexible magnet stuff. Could possibly handle more power?

You're right on that one. I'm just throwing ideas around at this point. I still have some time to decide on what I want to do.

Designing a subwoofer that could handle some serious RMS power, like 4000+, would be cool. Especially if I could do it using some unconventional designs.
