Long story short, I have a shitty paint job. I have a black coat of the stock paint that came from the factory. Then there is a top layer of my two tone OVER the stock paint. Then there is rubberized undercoating OVER everything, and then that was shittily painted black. My question is, can I sand my truck down by myself? The rubberized coating is stuck on the paint beneath it, not on the actual panels. I was ablel to chip some off easily with a screw driver.

Painting the truck yourself will be hard if you have never sprayed a car before. My buddy bought an older Ram 1500 and I helped him prep the body for paint. It took 100+ hours of sanding and bondo easily to get it as perfect as we could. After that we sprayed it our selves in his shop. After that we wetsanded to get the orange peel out. It turned out pretty good but it was ALOT of work. Prepping the body is the most important part and can take 100s of hours depending on how bad it is. Its a big project. Are you prepared to put in alot of time?

As for removing the paint, you can use paint stripper if the bedliner is really stubborn and you cant get it with just sanding. If you want to do it right, I would go down at least to the primer, but bare metal is best. Remember to prime any bare metal when your done so it doesnt get rusty.

be sure to use an etching primer on the bare metal...

I'm not going to paint it, I was just going to sand most of it to get rid of that labor cost when I get it repaired.

id hit it with some air craft paint remover first to get off the top few layers, then get a DA sander, unless you have a large air compressor dont get an air powered one. If you do use any strippers your going to have to make sure you do a really good job of cleaning it to make sure paint adheres when you take it in.
