Sealed box layout...need input

I have an '02 Explorer, and I'll be installing 2 W12GTi subs, sealed. It won't be a ported design, so don't even make the suggestion.

The recommeded box size is 1 cft/driver. The problem, I want to retain some of the rear cargo area utility. So, I wanted the cones to be protected against damage. I was wondering about mounting them behind the rear seat, but firing toward the sides, away from each other. The two enclosures back to back will be less than 27". That will leave a 7.5" gap on both ends. Certainly enough space for the cone to clear, but will this diminish the output, at all? Should I mount them another way? Firing to the rear?

Remember, I still want to use the rear cargo area, and don't want to damage the cones.

Thanks

Do you think that would be any different from firing to the side? I don't know... maybe, maybe not. It would still be firing into a chamber that would vent out to the rest of the vehicle. Just wanting to keep it as small a design as possible.
