Seal it, or port it?

Hey guys. A friend of mine has been getting into car audio, and presented me with a question that I, myself, really couldn't fully answer.

He wanted to get 2 15s (He wants to go with Kicker, whatever, that's his choice.) and wanted to get 2 CVR 15s. He wants to know how to get the most SPL out of his subs, and I suggested a ported box, as they usually yield a higher SPL rating. As we got to talking about it, I became unsure.

He was considering giving the CVRs (rated @ 500w RMS/sub) their exact RMS rating in a ported box, or maybe even a little under. Or, he was considering overpowering them by a little bit in a sealed box. I realize the two are like apples and oranges, because of all the different advantages of each one (high notes, low notes, etc.) but overall, I'm just curious - which do you think would yield higher levels of SPL?

Ported all the way. Sealed can only get you so far. You can at least make a ported box really efficient around the tuning which can yield a higher spl score. Plus, with a ported box you can use the position of the port to your advantage to make your numbers higher.

That's what was going through my mind. Being 15s, they'll be able to go relatively low even in a ported box, which is what, to my understanding, he was looking for. I just wasn't sure how sealed boxes responded to low frequencies.

Ah, then yep. No reason really not to go ported. If it is done correctly it will sound great and get loud at the same time.
Haha, I'll make sure to let him know. Thanks for the input, guys.

I'm gonna hit the sack. G'night!

I had two cvr 15s sealed and it was a waste. I ran 1500 watts to them and it really wasn't anything impressive. I upgraded to a single custom 15" tc sounds sub in a ported box and it made a world of difference.

They didn't get low and any higher bass just sounded like shit. I would just go ported, or I'd convince him to get different subs and then go ported.

I sprinkled magic db dust in the enclosure before I shipped it. That has been my secrete for years. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sneaky.gif.7189749b3a3f769e8815b47e8ae87f88.gif
