i agree with everything just said except the crown part, crown is cheap enough to where you can buy a 750 and bring it to a party.if you spend the money on a good scotch whiskey don't take it to just drink and get fucked up. i keep Johnny and some Crown at the house for those days where i just need a relaxing drink.

This12 year Glenlivet would be good to get your feet wet...no point buying a $200 Blue or Macallan's if you don't know you're going to like it. Spend $40-60 at first.
