running on one voice coil

There will effectively be less copper in the magnetic gap, so the BL (magnetic strength through the wire in the gap) will be less. Therefore the Qes will be less, and of course the Qts will be less.

BL is in the denominator. So as BL decreases, Qes (and hence Qts) increases. And since BL is squared, halving BL alone quadruples Qes.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention; that if the driver's T/S parameters were measured w/ coils in parallel, BL will remain the same but Re will double when using a single coil, which means Qes will double aswell. If the T/S were measured with the coils in series, then BL will halve but so will Re, so Qes will again double. Sensitivity will likewise drop by 3db when only using a single coil.

Here is a good website the shows the tested parameters of a single driver with coils in series, parallel, shorted and open:

A quick check in WinISD verifies this aswell //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Does that mean it will wang??

mark at mach 5 said many people run his maw subs with 1 coil. like its been said, t/s perams change, as well as power handling. wont hurt nothing, as long as its done properly. (ie diff box, and rms power is adjusted)

Just wondering why you never explained this reply, seeing as it wont damage anything.
I dont think anyone has mentioned in this thread.... when running a dvc with only one coil, all your t/s specs (and therefore enclosure specs) change. Precious few manufacturers list t/s specs for any of their dvc models with only one coil powered.
i just assumed by reading the OP's post he'd **** it up somehow. call it intuition //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The only problem is that you will have almost half power handling(you will have something over the half) of sub and double Qts.

You can still keep the same Qts by shorting the other coil out but you will lose sensitivity.

Also you can add a potentiometer(variable resistance) on free coil instead of shorting out and adjust the Qts and gain at the same time.
