Running 2ohms on a 4 ohm amp

Amp: PPI PCX2200, 2 channel x 200 watts @ 40hms. Rated for 800watts at 4 ohms bridged. 4 ohm is the minimum ohm load fo this amp, but I unknowing ran a kicker L7 on it @ 2 ohms for several months with no problems except some heat issues (nowhere near as hot as my HU gets though.)

I'd like to wire this amp to three SVC 8 ohm 8" subs, or in parralel @ 2ohms. I talked to PPI awhile back about this, their product support said that this would eventually blow the output transistors running it at 2 ohms.

I'm going to be running at minimal gain on the amp, the 8" subs can only take about 200w apiece. Eventually 3 12" JL W6's will go in and they will eat 4 ohms.

Do I run the 8's for awhile on 2 ohms or find a diff amp capable of 2 ohms for the time being?

3 8 ohm subs will actually net you 2.66 ohms not 2. With that said manufactures tell you the minimum impedance for a reason. You can run it lower but I dont suggest it.

I guess I'm wondering WHAT running this amp at a lower impedance would do to it and how I could minimalize the effect of running it at that load.

Exactly what PPI said, you could blow the outputs on the amp, the best way to minimize it is to not do it, plain and simple. That being said, I am not innocent of such an act. I have amps I have loaded way down past their minimum rating, some good results some bad, its pretty hard to know what your gonna get ahead of time though

Well thanks, I suppose theres only one way to find out- just do it. As mentioned in my post I did have a Kicker L7 @ 2ohms on it and SLAMMED THE CRAP out of it- I blew 60 amp fuses all the time because of the current draw, and all that really happened was the amp got hotter than it did while wired @ 4 ohms.
