RoHS compliance / lead-free manufacturing; Necessary?

Replacement FETS of the variety I seek come in two flavors;

RoHS compliant, and not;

All I can seem to find is the RoHS compliancy is a European directive to reduce the use of hazardous materials in electronics manufacturing - like Lead, in this case. (Pb.)

Other than that, no difference in parts? There's a ~90% price increase on this particular part for the RoHS lead-free style; The other specs are identical.

?

I don't see it catching on in the near future with that large of a price increase, but then again marketing it as a new "feature" that you cannot live without could cause it too sell.

I didn't suspect there was any functional difference;

I wondered about the thermal limitations though;

I'm not sure where the lead comes into play. I assume it's not the packaging - but lead's not so great a conductor, (//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif) so it must be an insulator?

Thanks for the replies, Jack & Brad.

..price increase
FQP 65n06 @ mouser.com; $2.33 (leadfree)

FQP 65n06-Q @ mouser.com; $1.19 (withlead)

That's the Fairchild conductor; There's also an STMicro (65, 06) @ ~$2.30ish.

Hey Jack - any preference? The originals were Fairchild.
