Screwing car speakers to the bare metal of the doors instead of using appropriate rings or baffles may account for harshness and shrill treble? What is the best material for this purpose?

Definitely not rubber, it looks like ABS.
I like this grille but it does not include a trim ring. It is designed to tuck under the OEM rubber gasket.
