While I cannot disagree entirely with what you are saying as some online outlets are decidedly dodgy in their business dealings there are some you can reasonably assume to be a safe buying environment. The site I posted about is a division of Discount Tire which is a nationwide company - no fly-by-night type of operation. The rims I got were brand new, never-been-mounted wheels.More times than not, you are buying returns or refurbs from online outlets. Also, shipping is very risky and expensive if you purchase online. I'd recommend buying locally if you can. It's not that much of a difference after shipping, especially if you're going to buy tires also. Go to your local outlet.
Well, I did a lot of researching online before I purchased my set of 22"s. I looked online and locally. My local shop (Advantage Tire in Central Point, OR) got me a good deal on my Helo Explode 22's with Pirelli Scorp Zero's 295/30/22, locking lugs and lifetime maintenence visits. I paid $2256 in April of 2004, and wasn't able to find them cheaper than that until December 2004 from discountwheelwarehouse. I don't know about where you live but I would challenge anyone in my part of the country to go into any B&M wheel/tire dealer and get a set of 17" Konig wheels, a full set of (mounted/balanced) 205/40ZR17 tires, a set of security lug nuts, and hub centric rings for under $600 new whether they have to be shipped or not.
Again, that will be dependant on where online you purchase from. Discount Tire is a bloody huge company. B&M outlets all over the freggin' US. Unfortunately for me, however there isn't a single one in the state of Louisiana. There is one that's only a 45 minute drive from me in Tyler, TX. That's where I went to buy tires when I needed to replace the ones that came on my wheels when I originally bought them. They gave me such a better price on the size tires that I needed that after getting prices from all over town locally it was worth the gas to drive to Tyler and back for a set of tires. (The closest local competitor was still higher than DT by over $150 and it did not cost me $150 to drive an 80 mile round-trip) My road hazard warranty, my lifetime balancing, my free rotation every 6K miles, etc etc etc is all handled by Discount Tire. It's simply unfortunate for me that I don't have one locally. But I would get treated just the same if I did. And being that Louisiana is but one of the FIFTY states I would assume that it's possible that someone else who is somewhere else wanting to buy some new rims might have one closer to them than I do.Not to mention, when you buy from a local shop, you get free rotations, check-ups, inflations, practically all entire maintenence work for your rims for free. They also painted my calipers for me at no charge. So you also have to keep all those little things in mind. When you buy online you don't get any of that special treatment.
