anyone ever considered this move from the u.s.? it seems somewhat doable to make the move, it looks as if the hardest part would be finding a job that pays well. from what i hear a person can live decent on 2k a month considering land is much more affordable, universal health care, and of course lower taxes. i am currently living in michigan, my last years in college at cmu. i have in fact met my soul mate and she is down for anything. at this point i am expecting a bachelors in information systems, does anyone know if this would benefit me there? also, are there any good costa rica forums?

maybe so, but where is this country headed? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/titanic.gif.8089b7552c370bcc138aa121756d0c0b.gif
If you don't speak spanish your wasting your time mentally masturbating.

If you do, it could work out for you.

you will need proper residence permit and the such to be able to work there, live there and have the social benefits provided by the state.

There are few if any countries that you can just show up in and expected to have unlimited right of stay and access to the benefits of the society.

Your best bet would to bet employment with a u.s. company (assuming you are USC) and have them deal with the consular affairs on your behalf. Probably much easier said than done, especially if you are a recently graduated entry level worker.

3. EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION

In general, a foreign national ("the employee") assigned to work in another country must evidence a degree of proprietary knowledge, specialized skills, or managerial/executive-level skills that are not readily available in the destination country's domestic labor market. To work in Costa Rica, it is preferable that the employee possesses at least a four-year university degree and at least 12 months of proprietary experience.

The following is a summary of the types of work permits/visas for Costa Rica, the steps involved in obtaining employment authorization, and other relevant information for employees going to Costa Rica on a work assignment.

"Regularization" from Visitor to Work Status

Certain nationals may enter Costa Rica as visitors and convert to work or temporary residence permit status, under local employer sponsorship, without leaving the country. These nationals may remain in Costa Rica or come and go in visitor status while the petition is pending, but are not permitted to work during this time. It is best for the employee to carry the work/residence permit application receipt on any trips to and from Costa Rica while the application is pending.

For those nationals who must obtain their work permit before arriving in Costa Rica, the procedure is more complicated and may require a great deal more documentation. Please contact your Fragomen Global Advisor for assistance.

Types of Work Permits/Visas

The major employment permit categories are:

1. Temporary Residence Permit (TRP): The Temporary Residence permit was previously used for long-term assignments at the managerial level only, but legislation passed in 2006 broadened the category and it may now be used for a wide range of positions and assignment types. The Temporary Residence Permit may be renewed annually for an indefinite period, provided the offer of employment stands. See below for more information on requirements and the application process.

i would only move to central america if i was already rich. Or was going to do some public service. Like my uncle's boss owns a bus company in el salvador, or this girl i met started a 4 wheeler renting business in costa rica. Or have a PC cafe.

I hope you plan on becoming a Costa Rican citizen or your dream of land ownership is nothing more than a dream.
