What do you guys think, should they remove "Under God" from the Pledge, and "In God We Trust" Off of our currency?

And religion in government in general?

I personally, being athiest, think it should be removed from both. Although I am athiest, I am not very outspoken on such subjects, I am just curious as to what you guys think.

I honestly couldn't care less about the Pledge or "In God We Trust".

What bothers me are judges and politicians using their religious beliefs to influence public policy...state and religion need to be completely seperate. And it bothers me when people say "Well, the Founding Fathers built this country on Christian values"...BS. Most of them were Deists. After all, they had just come from a country where religion and state were intertwined.

Keep religion out of government, thank you very much.

I hope you realize there was no reference to a higher power in the Pledge of Allegiance until une 14, 1954 as a PR move by Eisenhower to distance ourselves from the "godless" USSR. The Pledge was perfectly fine without that passage before and would be fine again without it.

There is nothing wrong with either of them... They have no reference to what religious God, it is not like it says "One nation under Jesus", or something like that... It is a God in general, and every religion prays to a god, or gods. So what is wrong with it?

IT SHOULD STAY....in court rooms you have to swear on the HOLY BIBLE...regardless if you believe in it or not....Our current currency says "in God we trust" and i believe that the Statue Of Liberty says "in God we Trust" also.....so since the Pledge is a government thing...i say it stays..

Yea, Jackfrost, you hit that one bullzeye there, I didnt mean to have discusion just about the pledge and on money, but its part of it too. I agree with you, of course, cuz im athiest, but thats not the only reason, just that I feel offended when I dont say the plegde at school, and I get my *** chewed for it as well. I think it should be taken out, to keep it seperate. They are crossing lines that should not have been crossed, and its only causing problems.

agreed on all of that.

Whats wrong with it is that one minority religion does not pray to a god at all. Minorities should have just as many rights as majority. It comes down to government power and constitutional rights. If we have a right to religion, we should not be forced to use or say things that arnt part of our religion. However at the same time, we have a right of freedom of speech. I am not saying that other religions CANT say "a nation under god" or anything, just that minorites should not be forced to join with a majority group, Our government was supposed to keep issues like this to a minimum, but like I said, they are crossing lines, and they need to redraw them lines to keep it seperate to steer away from religion in government.

I totally disagree with that. How can it offend you? You are Athiest... So this means that you can not say the Pledge of Allegiance?

Who cares if people "chew you out" for not saying it, is this a 5th grade class? You would expect some maturity if you are in college, which I doubt they say the Plege in though...

Convert...

it was a junior high school class. Made a big issue out of me not saying the pledge.

I do not think that you should want to change the entire currency of our country, and change the Pledge, it just isnt going to happen. People making fun of you or whatever in a junior high class is just idiotic, they are assholes and they should not have done that. At the time our nation was founded, religion played a HUGE role in everyones everday lives, thus the reason for out currency reading what it does. I do not think there is anything wrong with it at all.. Do you feel offended when you spend a dollar bill? Nothing will change, nothing should change. They are simply words.

but what is God?

God is different for each person. Some people see some mystical force in the clouds as God. Some people see a six-armed elephant as God. Frosty sees glowing tubes as God. God is a personal concept. No one can tell you (even though religions try) what to see as God.
