recommendations for good trip hop and/or drum n bass

the difference? lol, about 100 bpm

Trip hop (also known as the Bristol sound) is a term coined by British dance magazine Mixmag, to describe a musical trend in the mid-1990s; trip hop is downtempo electronic music that grew out of England's hip hop and house scenes. Characterized by a reliance on breakbeats and a sample-heavy sound pioneered by Coldcut's remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full", trip hop gained notice via popular artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, and rock-influenced sound groups such as Ruby, California's DJ Shadow, and the UK's Howie B. Londoners Morcheeba and Glideascope are also often associated with this sound. The latest additions to this line of performers are Jem and Australia's Spook. The Bristol Sound came out of the wider Bristol Urban Culture scene.

The “trip” in “Trip-Hop” refers to the “out-of-this-world” state following the use of a drug. This provides insight into Trip-Hop’s strong connection with the senses. Furthermore, the “hop” in “Trip-Hop” explains how Trip-Hop is derived from Hip-Hop.

Drum and bass (drum n bass, drum'n'bass, DnB, d'n'b) is an electronic music style.

Originally an offshoot of the United Kingdom breakbeat hardcore and rave scene, it came into existence when djs and producers mixed reggae basslines with sped-up hip hop breakbeats. Pioneers such as Fabio, Grooverider, Andy C, Roni Size, DJ SS, Brockie, Mickey Finn, Kenny Ken, Goldie, Velocity and other DJs quickly became the stars of drum and bass, then still called jungle.

There is no universally accepted semantic distinction between the terms "jungle" and "drum and bass". Some associate "jungle" with older material from the first half of the 1990s, and see drum and bass as essentially succeeding jungle with the newer, post-techstep developments. Others use jungle as a shorthand for ragga jungle, a specific sub-genre within the broader realm of drum and bass. In the USA, the combined term "Jungle Drum and Bass" (JDB) has some popularity, but is not widespread elsewhere. Probably the widest held viewpoint is that the terms are simply synonymous and interchangeable: drum and bass is jungle, and jungle is drum and bass - although many drum and bass or jungle fans will debate this belief.

Hmm if you like trip hop.. u'd prolly want lighter DNB like Roni Size...
between these two, i don't know what i like. i'm tryin to broaden my music horizon, so, i must learn the differences between the 2, who are the artists, what are the subgenres, who are the most popular artists with the good songs and and who are the really overlooked artists with dynamic songs

i dont really listen to trip-hop so I cant really help you there. but I can help with dnb. i'm not going to list the sub-genres because its really confusing and its pointless anyway, but i will list some artists you should check out....in no particular order because this is off the top of my head

Artists I like that might fall somewhere along the lines of trip-hop...

Zero 7, Morcheeba, Leaf, Massive Attack, Cinematic Orchestra, Jaga Jazzist, Thom Yorke.

I really suggest "This Too Shall Pass" by Breakage. Its a 2-disc album, the first being chilled out drum and bass, and the second more downtempo stuff. I think you'd probably dig it.

i dl'ed some morcheeba, a coulpa times........ i'd rather take a bath and have my plugged in laptop join me instead of listening to that!!

portishead is pretty good though
