Recommend small SUV good on gas

This. V6 4wd highlander. May not be the prettiest thing out there but it's faster than pretty much anything anybody else has suggested, should serve her purpose well, and will probably do over 20 mpg on the highway. No need for something as crude as an old jeep if she just needs to make it down a dirt road to get to the highway. Cherokees and Wranglers ride like crap. Cherokees have nonexistent leg room.

I have a 2010 Subaru Forester X Premium (MT) and I'm loving it. Plenty of power and room. I picked it over the Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav4. I traded in my 4Runner for it. It has plenty of power and good gas mileage for its class. I got 28 mpg on my last trip to Chicago which included about 20% city driving. People over at Subaru forum are getting over 30 mpg on a regular basis.

Now dat's what I'm talkin' 'bout!!

most the american suv's are cheaply crafted, especially the interior (a lot of plastic) and ugly. what's your price range? I would go with an Infiniti fx or Nissan Murano. Both perform well, look good, and get pretty good gas mileage.
