Recommend 400 watt sub in sealed enclosure

So I've been reading through the forums, but decided to just open up a thread. I was set on getting a dcon, but I've never made a box before and think I should go sealed instead of ported. I've read that these subs aren't too great in sealed boxes. I don't have the proper experience or time to learn how to properly build one.

So what else is out there. I'm looking for a daily driver, probably 50-50 sq spl. I want something that can get deep. I've seen other threads recommending subs in this similar range, but they are like infinities and memphis. I have nothing against these brands, but after buying a internet direct sub for my cousin's home theatre I'm very much sold on going underground brand vs mainstream, I think the bang for buck is way better.

I'm open to all suggestions, I'm looking for a 12" that stays clean but can get low. The 400 watts is at 4ohms. I have alpine type r's as components, if that makes any difference. Budget is $150-$200. Thanks.

You can get a box designer to design your box and give you a detailed cut cheet. If you're not horrible with wood working, it should be easy! I would reccomend staying with the DCON, honestly. SSA DCONs are arguably one of the best entry level woofers in that price range.

try looking into the audio technix strato they just came out i have an atmos audio strato the parent company the line and let me tell you they are good subs like small boxes and under rated[

You can get a box designer to design your box and give you a detailed cut cheet. If you're not horrible with wood working, it should be easy! I would reccomend staying with the DCON, honestly. SSA DCONs are arguably one of the best entry level woofers in that price range.

I can't say I've necessarily ditched this idea, but I just want to see if I can get something just as impressive with a sealed set up. What program would you recommend? I've been messing around with something called winisd, but I don't know, I'm just a little lost with this kinda stuff. I have 0 wood working skill and no room to put any equipment (I live in chicago city), but I thought I'd get the pieces cut by a lumberyard or something, n then put it together myself. That would be the plan for either sealed or ported, so its not necessarily the building that is turning me off, just the idea of having to properly design a ported box vs the easier design of a sealed.

Cool, I will look into that. Do they do well sealed?

Also, I've come across tc sounds epic, soundsplinter rl-i, and dayton audio reference hf. Any comments or suggestions on either of these?

My vote is for the TC Epic if you're considering it. Great SQ sub and should do pretty darn well sealed at that power

HF needs too much volume, btw. Perhaps you're thinking of the HO which can actually perform decent in 0.5cu sealed.

He said he was looking for SQ/SQL. Not sure those'll suit his tastes. But you're right, a good ported box will definitely outshine most sealed. Helped a million for the transparency of my ID10. I literally can't find that thing in my cabin when it's playing.

Keep in mind, those subs are really intended for home theater setups. They just happen to translate well into the CA world. Every time I've heard HF get brought up into debate like this, the chief complaint was they needed much larger enclosures to respond well in a car whereas the HO did not.
