and expect to get flamed. What is the difference in sound between two different size boxes (example 3 cubes compared to 4 cubes) tuned to the same frequency (say 31hz).

A larger enclosure is more efficient, particularly in the bandwidth of the port gain. It will require less power to achieve the same output as a smaller enclosure. The downside is that mechanical power handling is reduced. An enclosure that is too large will peak at the port tuning frequency but output above and below the port tuning frequency is reduced.
