re-gluing a detached spider?

you sturrin at me brah?
well i just reconed my 9518, and after about a week in super hot weather, and under high excursion, the spider popped off.

dd's have a plastic fitting around the spider and thats what gets glued to the basket. i can lift the cone up to get an inch and a half or so of clearance under there.

my worry is, how do i clean the old glue out of there without dropping a bunch of crap into the gap. theres enough room i could get a dremel extension in there, but even turning the thing upside down i'd be concerned with getting the gap dirty.

should i try glueing over the old dried glue, clamping and letting sit for a few days?

You may be able to reglue it without removing the old glue. Does it sit flat with the old glue still there?

Also you may need to pop off the dust cap and shim the v.c. to make sure its aligned right during the glue down... depends how tight the gap is.

I wouldnt grind it down, mix up some epoxy, 5 minute variety, and put it under the spider, and pray that the surround will hold it true in the middle and the coiil doesnt rub when you finish

what type of epoxy? i used black rubberized ca glue the first time around. r/c car tire glue.

probably why it failed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

5 minute marine grade epoxy you can buy it at advanced auto/autozone/ walmart

i dont think the alignment will be affected. i jammed some index cards in the gap, tight where i could barely move the cone, then glued the spider. then i couldnt find my clamps and tried to hold it down for 10-15 minutes :/

after that dried, i glued the cone, leaving the index cards in the gap. then the dustcap after the cone dried. i'm thinking the cone will keep it pretty centered, i can still push straight down on the dustcap without the coil rubbing. it plays fine at low volume, when i get it moving, i can hear a fast metallic tapping sound.

it was the exact product snoopdan recommended to use in his reconing thread //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif bob smith ic-2000. it did seem a lot thinner than what i see on subs, not as rubbery.

did you grind the basket before you glued it? Also did you sand the plastic spider ring to give a rough surface for the glue to adhere
the basket i did, the plastic, i forgot to rough up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

in any case, the recones are cheap. already ordered one to use as a spare if this one ends up working out.

you use the same 5 minute marine epoxy on the spider, dustcap and cone?

you can, the ca glue wasnt your problem, it was the lack of roughing up the spider //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

that plastic spacer thing sucks, with regular nomex spiders you can get ca glue to saturate it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
