RCA cable work with Ipod + Head unit?

I have an Alpine 9830, and I was given a RCA cable that is supposed to be used on home stereos... I tried to hook the rcas into the back of my head unit and then plugged the other end into my ipod and nothing happened. Does this not work? Or is there something I did wrong, such as must the head unit be set to something to hear the ipod?

Head unit will need to be set to AUX if you're using the AUX-in.
