On a more serious note, I think it's somewhere between your two viewpoints. I think it's just as likely to be motivated by empathy as it is to be motivated by wanting to feel superior or alleviating guilt for other things in your life. i helped an old lady unload her groceries sunday. she was resistant at first, but i assured her i wasnt going to rob her. after i was through she gave me a dime.

i was drinking a beer outside some random *** fu ck's house a few weeks ago at like 6 am and this ***** was struggling to carry some publix bags up the stairs... i helped her with her groceries and felt like a champion for the rest of the day...
