"Spare Tire" Subwoofer Box - Suburban

Hey everyone.

It's been a long time since I've been back into the car audio scene. In the early 2000's I was on sounddomain's car audio forums with a pair of RE XXX 18's and a Tru Technology SledgeHammer. Times changed and I slowly sold off most of my gear.

I did, however, manage to keep a single 12" Elemental Designs 13kv (or something like that...nothing too huge, but good enough). I have a 99 Chevy Suburban that has an exposed spare tire in the cargo area.

I know lots of people put subwoofer boxes in their spare tires in like Camaros and sports cars but my spare tire is wrapped up in the cargo area / trunk and I'd like to replace it with a subwoofer box. Is there anything out there that exists like this? I'm trying to be stealth mostly and not take up much of my cargo space as it is.

Here is a pic of the spare tire in the trunk

you are 100% better off building your own out of wood and fiberglass.

at the verry most - think of them as a general shape of what box you need and be prepared to re enforce the heck out of them if you plan to use any kind of decent sub in there with any amount of power greater than 50w. lol

i'm not particularly tied to making an actual round box in the shape of a tire...

one idea i'm toying around with is to put a regular square box and then add some kind of corner pieces (strictly for "form") so that when I put the spare tire cover back on it appears completely stealth.

I'm not really hoping to make an intricate box for something so simple.

The airspace you'll get in the spare tire is pretty minimal. What if you build a short box to function as a false floor and used a pair of shallow subs?
that sounds like his best bet.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsupwink.gif.129404938effda6ad9cca39e7f4b58a3.gif

thanks for the input everyone. Today I went out to the car to take some measurements and came to the conclusion that the rear spare tire would not be adequate for my bass needs.

Before getting this 99 suburban I had a 97 tahoe that I built a custom tuned box for a pair of IDMAXs. I still have the box sitting in my garage and the IDMAXs are in my CTS-V. I think I'm going to take the IDMAXs out of the V and put them back into the suburban.

I guess the car audio bug has bitten me again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
