Quick question

Im buying a 300zx and its a 5spd, ive drivin stick b 4 but not in a while, the question is, when im downshifiting (to slow down "engine braking"), lets say im going 80 on the parkway and get down to 50 when i shift into the next lowest gear do i have the apply the gas wen letting off the cluth into the lower gear (say 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd w\e)

It would depend on what you want the car to do after giving it the lower gear. Are you downshifting to the lower gear for more power (harder acceleration)? Then yes, you would want to apply a bit of right foot to it.

Are you downshifting to utilize engine braking (using the motor's compression to slow down in addition to or instead of the brakes)? Then no, you wouldn't need to give it any gas. Just put it in the lower gear and let out the clutch.

Your ? is a bit confusing to me and I'm not entirely certain I've even answered what you're asking. Usually it's speed related. If you are slowing down, you will let the transmission and the clutch slip/grip absorb the speed. It will increase the engine speed itself.

Only when you are upshifting do you give it a little gas (or alot if you are the racy type).
