quick newb question

The alternator is grounded to the engine block, therefore you would want to fully ground the engine block so you don't make anything electronics fail because of a faulty ground. Just like an amp, ground it with a thick wire, you'll be able to run it for a while, ground it with a little puny wire, and you can say bye bye to that amp. (Not necessarily, but you get my point, I hope.)
