Question !!

Hey everybody, I got one or two question.

I have a pretty nice audio setup in my car (it does the job) but i'm wondering how could I get a better quality of sound, specially the bass!

Here's what I have (in a Tercel '94 LOL) :

-10'' Kicker L5 (Older gen) with a way too huge case (I have no more trunk)

-Two 5,25po Alpine in the front doors (55w RMS - 170w peak)

-Two 6,5po JBL Audio GTO-628 in the back (80w RMS - 180w peak)

-Alpine M500 for the Kicker

-Radio is a Pioneer DEH6300UB

This pretty rocks all the car while listening to Skrillex, but I have to boost the bass (to +6) from the radio and get the sound pretty high to really feel the bass.

I don't know if some of you have a similar setup (same radio, same sub, same amp), if so, it would be nice if you could tell me what settings you did on the amp (or radio) to get better bass and better general quality of sound.

Also, would it help the Mids and Highs if I get a 50x4 Watts RMS amp for my speakers ?

And one last question, does the cold affects the speaker and sub (cold like 32F to -4F and sometimes less) - yeah, it's cold where I live.

Thank you for your time and answers !

PS: If this is posted at the wrong place, I am very sorry.

If your not getting what you want from the amp/sub setup then it is one your amp settings or two you need to upgrade.

The third option is your enclosure is not adequate for your application.

Let me add on to that to help push this a bit more in the right direction for you.

If you can go over your head unit settings for us so we know how that is set. Then go over your amp settings for us.

This will allow us see what if anything is not correct.

Also, if you want, you can get the box dimensions (hxdxw selaed/ported if ported port size length) and we can go over that and see if that may be causing the issue.

Odds are is is a multitude of these that are incorrect, but ultimately you are "out growing" your systems limitations.

Box Size:

length: 28"

height: 12"

depth: 16"

Amp Settings:

Gain: It's set at less than 0.5V

Bass EQ: +4Db (Max is +12)

LP Filter: 50hz

Radio Settings:

EQ :

-8hz +3

-100hz +3

-315hz +3

-1.25hz +1

-3.15hz +2

Loudness: High

Sw Setting 1: Normal (Can choose between Off, Normal, Reverse)

Sw Setting 2: 50hz +/- 0

HPF Setting: 63hz (High Pass Frequencies: 125 Hz, 63 Hz, 50 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz)

SLA: 0

Fader/Balance: F - Rear+2 / B 0

What i'm not sure how to set is the LP Filter, HP Filter, the SW Setting 2 (I can choose between a bunch of Hz) and pretty much all the settings on the amp! I did not want to boost too much the Bass EQ on the amp cause I don't want to blow up my subwoofer,

Yea there is a multitude of issues with almost all of your settings. The idea is you want to keep from clipping and yet still achieve good sound levels.

All bass boost or bass adjustments should be zeroed out when start. Also loudness should be off.

If you look around here in the amplifier tech section, there are some great write ups on how to adjust your amplifier as well. In order to get you more familiar with what each setting does and how to adjust them I would highly recommend reading through them before you set off and changing things.

Your enclosure is 2.33ft3 which for your square 10 is not horrible, but could actually be ported to perform better. If you decent with some hand tools you could add a precision port(which is a flared round port) and that would help out the enclosure part of it. If you want more info on that just PM me and we can discuss those options.

However, I suggest reading some of the links from this thread. http://www.caraudio.com/forums/amplifiers/206371-general-amplifier-information-consolidated-list-amp-discussion-stickies-more.html And apply what you learn to your application. Then move one from there.

Thanks for the tips, i'll go read this.

I bought the Sub + Amp used, so it was already set like that. I don't get very much clipping, exept on a very few song.. I just lower the sound when I ear some.

Also, on the Pioneer, max sound level is 64 and the higher I listen music is a 35 for my iPod, 40 on Tuner.. It hurts my ears at those levels lol.

I'll see if I want to make my Sub Box ported.. As winter is coming, I would do this next summer.

EDIT:

I've done some adjustments and already it's making a good difference, althought it's hard to say if the sub is clipping or not.. + I can't really disconnect my speakers since I've welded all the wires and it's all connected to the head unit, not an amp.

The gain was way too low, which explained why I had to use the bass booster + Loudness to High. I now no longer need to use the bass booster and Loudness is on low, if I set it at off, the bass really fades, which is good cause sometimes I get tired of it.

I got the LP Filter up to 100, it was on 50, and the Bass EQ is unchanged.

I did not change the EQ of the radio, it makes the speakers match the sub perfectly, and without clipping from the speakers.

The only thing that stills bug me is the fact that the sub really kicks on electro tracks, but that I have to use the bass booster (like +2) on metal songs to feel the double bass drum nicely. I guess that's just how the songs are made..
