Question on hooking up front mids in place of rear mids with KDC-X994 HU

Hello, noob to this forum and to quality car audio. Been lurking here for the past month and realize the wealth of experience here, including personal opinions. My overall desire is for sound quality. My main experience is with my home system. Just started on my 4Runner by installing a KDC-X994 HU this past weekend. My plan is (as budget allows) speakers and deadening next, amp(s),sub, then better speakers, better amps etc. you know the drill.

Currently the set-up is: 1998 4Runner Limited, X994 HU, factory premium (whatever that means) comps up front (tweeters in sail panel, mids in lower door) and coaxials in rear doors.

The Question: Is there any reason I can't disconnect my rear speakers, hook those leads to my front mids, take the current leads off the front mids and hook them to the tweets? The goal being is being able to use the HU TA for the tweets and door mids and the HU crossovers. Till I get amps, I can't separately TA and xover my tweeters from the mids. The HU treats the front comps as a single left and right speakers. I only care for front staging and imaging right now. When I get a sub I'll be interested in rear mid woofers to help bring the subs forward.

Advice, potential problems and recommendations appreciated.

p.s. Is this the right forum for this?

Thanks for the reply. The stock "Premium" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif HU had a factory amp hooked up, which I removed, but have no idea what the output was. I guess I need to get to the tweeters and verify what they're rated for. Also, hooked up the way I want, I can use the HU hp xovers to keep the tweeters safe, I'm thinking.?

Thanks again.

No, you can't use the HU hp xovers to keep em safe. I have a X994, although it's a great unit, the hp xover only goes up to 250HZ. So wait for your amps, that would be your best option.

Agreed, wait for an amp and use a bass blocker on the tweeter wires. The factory tweeters may have been summed at the factory amp. However the toyotas lusually have tweeter in parallel in the door. If you have a aftermmarket deck they might have removed the factory amp already. Its a small silver box behind the radio. Its about 6"x4" and has standard toyota pllugs in the bottom. But deff don't run the tweets from the deck with out something inn between to filter bass.

Sorry, been in Canada, just got back, thanks for the reply, just checked the specs and you're right, only goes up to 250hz. I just did 14 hours running them off the HU with the rears pretty much faded out. The speakers actually sound better than expected but definately gotta go. I guess I'll put a hp line filter in till I get amps, Thanks.

Thanks, based on your's and guach80's advice, I'll wait for the amps, and I'll put a filter inline for the tweets.

LOL - mine was a higher end model too - iirc deh-9300. Low mileage too, it was sitting around for year collecting dust.

One or two, they are still subwoofer outs and are mono summed signals from both left and right. Even the 2 RCA subwoofer pre-outs on the 2nd one...

Nothing to add to this, Just wanted to say good luck and that I miss MiniDisc. OH!! Is that a Japanese Radio Tuner or does it get stations in the US?
