question on algebra 2 test today

haha no shortage or paint or anything. I do not know the answer yet. we just took this test today and everyone i asked didnt know. i can most likely tell you guys tomarrow.
How did you guys get 5 hours? I guessed and went with 10 but now that i think about it it should be less than 10hours.
why the **** would u guess 10

unless the second guy is retarded and the first guy has to make up for his mistakes, that answer is completely illogical...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/santa.gif.e1ec9cf2e0a0dd232ad35aa594a126d0.gif

well i took the average of the two i couldnt think of any way to do it

depends on how many trips to home depot it takes.

if it just me, or when you're doing a household project, do you have to take 18 trips to HD or Lowes?
it also depends on how many mexicans they hired...but of course they couldn't put that into the problem, because SOMEONE would probably call INS and get the publishers in trouble //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

5 hours....
Best i can figure...if the first person did the whole room in 8, they would do half in 4. The other person did the whole room in 12, so half in 6. The average of 4 and 6 is 5.
Quick edit. Thats the same way I did it. I knew it was going to be slighty high by a few percent due to the fact that a was faster then b. But hey we're not the ones taking the test. I don't know how well that reads, but I know what I mean, so that'as all that matters. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Edit: 4.8

well it cant be 10. the first guy can do it in 8 by himself. I look at it this way, person a could paint half the room in 4 hours and person b paints 50% slower which would make the total time 6 hours. I could be way off. someone has to know this.

I thought about it more and got something a little different...but i dont know how close to correct it is

x/8 + x/12 = 1

Solve for x.

4.8 for the non-math wizards.
x2, same answer I got.

think about it like this too..

person A paints at a rate of 1 room per 8 hours

so 1room /8hours

Person B is 1 room per 12 hours, so 1room/12hours

1room/8 hours + 1room/12hrs = 1 room / x hours

1/8 + 1/12 = 1/x

Solve for x.

Yup. Once I did it on paper that's what I got. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
X2 once I wrote it down and thought about it.....

Crap Im tired today.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif
