Alright so now Ive recently moved and gotten high speed internet. Now we have 3 comps, a Dell, my parents custom laptop, and the one im typing on now (Compaq Presario) and they are all windows XP.

So now we have a DSL modem that we didnt have before we moved. Now I have this router and it worked fine with our old DSL with the Dell, this comp, and an Xbox 360.

We just bought a linksys WRT54G wireless router and 4 port router. I cant get either of these to work. The little interenet thingy on the green bar on the bottom of the screen says connected but it will not work on the interenet. I would like the laptop (yes it has a wireless card) to run wirlessly and the other two comps to run wired.

Older router (the one that worked fine before)

Router I just bought

thx

So are you not able to get hardwire internet to work or both hardwire and wireless. Hardwire should just be plug-n-play and it'll work. Wireless on the other hand needs to be setup through the router settings control @ the url.

Look in the book you got with it (or cd) on how to enter the router set-up. You need to code the router for the DSL settings provded by your ISP.

Ah so you just moved and you have a different dsl modem now is that correct. Didn't see that part. As said above, do you actually have a dsl account service for the new location? Also if you do already and u switched to a different dsl modem. You would most likely be required to register the modem befor it would work correctly.

Before i dont even think that we had a modem. The people that provided it sent a crew out and they set it up. The older router worked fine there and I didnt even have to set anything up.

Yes we had to visit the modems IP page and set it up before it worked.

Also in the CD it goes through the whole setup process and then it says "checking computer settings" it finishes that and then it asks for a password. Ive put in the pass to our DSL service and all it does is scans the computer settings again. It will keep doing this over and over again till you get the pass right.

you need a modem to accept the signal and turn it into a signal the router can reconize and then distribute. Usually the service comes into the modem then the output on the modem goes to the internet port in the router. If you are using a wired connection use the first port, but there is no other connection for the wireless.

You may need to open a web browser window, type in 192.168.0.0 i think it is and if you are connected to the router it will ask you for the user name and password, that info should be in your manual. I think for the linksys its just admin in the user name, its been awhile since I set up one up. In there you will need to enter your internet service information and hit ok/save then the router will restart itself and you should be ready to go.

Did that help? there is more to setting up the wireless connections but it is just using the windows wizard. You could set up a small network from the main computer, depends on what you need to do.
