Question for local shop installers

I've been an installer for big box stores for the last two and a half years... and I think with the way politics are at circuit city right now it might be time for me to move on. I got a job offer to work at a local shop(http://www.dukescarstereo.com) as a installer. They said they can give me all the hours I want and with my experience I would have no problem doing anything. They also said I would be taught to tint windows.

The only thing that is holding me back... the pay. Pay is comission based, 50% of every install you do... and if you don't do any installs that day you get minimum wage.

Is this how most local shops work or not? I mean it would be cool to work on some of the stuff that they do, but does that pay seem right?

Yeah that place looks nice...maybe you could talk to some of the other installers and see how they are making out....seems like it would be alot better of a place to work then jerkit city. looks like they a few decent brands so you wouldn't have to try and make your comission on all "dual" systems...

im paid on commision.... i work at a big box store.... so it's allways busy...

on a good week i can pull in over 1500.00 easy. holidays are the shiiiiiiiit!!!!

plus i get bonus.... there are slow days... but i just work on my car..

so i like it..

The guy that actually offered me the job is there full time installer at this location. He said it usually works out to about 12bucks an hour in the summer, then it is just redic in the winter(remote starts like crazy I guess).

When I was looking for a job, every shop in town told me that they pay mostly commission. Most shops have very few employees and charge a ridiculous markup for everything, so I think you should be ok as long as the shop is relatively busy.

i really wouldent go commision unless you know/ have a feal for what it takes, as far as how many min/hours it take's you to install a certin product.

for instance it takes me.

20-30 min to install a headunit, satt radio, 1 set of door speakers. depending on car.

and about 1 hour to install, cd changer's, 2ch amp, even some alarms. and it all depends on the car...

I just moved to TC from Saginaw this year. I've been to dukes many a time. Its not a bad shop. I Think you should take the job or check or sound decisions if its still around. Either way i know both places get some decent business so you want have to worry about lack of people wanting installs. Good luck with the whole thing though.

I may be down in Saginaw this weekend and Ill probably end up there to check out amp prices.

Redmonds is the shop that sees the most traffic around the saginaw area, if I could work full time I would be there(full time student so no time). Ohh well I took the job, we'll see how it goes! I start monday.

Went thru my box today seeing what I still had and didn't... $250 at sears later it is back upto spec //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
