question about wattage

id like to know which is the ideal wattage that got to have an amplifier to drive speakers or subwoofers for hours like in dj or night club aplications aplications based on the wattage of those speakers. There is a rule for that?

There is no "rule" for it b/c all companies rate their speakers differently. Some give you a rating that the driver can take comfortably and some tell you what the limit of the driver is before it gets damaged. In reality the best way to find out about a specific driver is word of mouth (aside from actual testing), ppl that have used the equipment before can tell you how much power it can take and whether they blew it or not and how long it lasted at a certain wattate, etc. The wattage of the amplifier you use for it should be based on what you know the driver can handle and how loud you know you will need it. If you have a driver that can take 2000wrms but it gets plenty loud at 500wrms, you can save yourself money and get the smaller amp. On the flip side, if you have a 2000wrms amp and a driver that only handles 500wrms dont be scared to plug it in, just be careful where you set your gains and dont be stupid about it. Also never assume that b/c the wattage of the amplifier is lower than the power handling rating of the driver that you cant blow or damage it. W/ that attitude you are liable to drive your amp to clipping which can be much worse than overpowering.

thanks for your answer. i still have a doubt... i know i have to be carefull setting the gains and the best way to protect my drivers is being smart at the time i increase the volume untill the max they can handle... but do you think is a good idea to buy an amplifier and a driver that match each other rms wattage or a more powerfull amplifier than the driver (is that is the case how much powerfull)? what recomendation can you give me at the time ill buy these things?

Id say more powerful, would you rather clip your amp and destroy both the amp and sub, or overpower your sub and just destroy it. Of course you could avoid both by setting gains right
