Question about using o scope

I have this ocope http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=320-290&raid=50&rak=320-290. How exactly do i use it to set my gains? It has the single probe tip, i was trying to use it by just disconnecting my positive wire from my sub and hooking the probe around it. However, the waves i get on the screen are just going crazy. What am i doing wrong? I used a 50 hz test tone by the way. Any help is appreciated

1st thing, reset it.

Find out where your HU clips first(I'd turn off all processing, i.e. bass 0, treble 0, loud off, eq flat). Connect the probes to the RCAs, one probe on the male end, other on the outside metal sleeve. Play a 1kHz 0dB tone, push the "AUTO" button, keep turning the volume up until you see a squarewave, back it down until it goes away. This is your MUV, Master Usable Volume. Turn the deck off.

Onto the amps, connect the probes to your amps outputs with no speakers attached. Push the "AUTO" button while the tone is playing. 1kHz for highs, 40-60Hz for the lows. Move the gain around until there's no squarewave. To get more average power out of your amps for music, try a reduced tone. -3dB, -6dB, -10dB.

yes there is a gator clip, do i connect that to the ground the the probe around the positive?
