Question about port placement/separation for custom box

Honda + Subs = Rattles :(
Alright, so at the moment, I'm just running two 10" kicker comp 08's. They're in a generic pre-fab box I bought from the store I bought the subs. I wanted to try my hand at a ported box and see how they perform. Anyways... I drive a '98 Honda Accord 4dr and for those who are familiar with them, its got not only fold down seats, but a little port that can be opened in the back seat armrest that comes into the cabin. Now, 90% of ported boxes I see out there have the subs as well as the ports facing the same direction out of the box (towards the rear of the car). Would it be a good idea to have the subs facing rearward in the car, but the port exiting thru the front of the of the trunk into the cabin? I'll take a picture of my trunk so you guys can understand what I'm saying. I'll also draw up a little sketch and render it in a 3D program if its a build worth doing.

And as for my second question. When making a port, lets say one 10" sub needs a port area that's 1.5" wide by 9" tall. If I didn't want to have separate ports for each sub, would I simply double the width of the port for one sub so it is 3" by 9"? I want to have the subs share the same port, is a divider necessary for the port exit? I'd like to not have one if possible as the 3/4 MDF would just take up width and I have limited port area through that armrest hole.

Feel free to make suggestions on improvements or let me know if this won't work aswell as a traditional rear facing sub/port setup.

Thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/idea.gif.5acb6a39a9b92425414c316dda202bad.gif

Ok, heres a picture of the subs in the trunk, you can see part of the port going into the cabin.

Here's another picture of the port from the inside of the car.

And finally, I took a picture from a little further away so you can see the shape of my trunk. As you can see, the dual 10" box fits perfectly in that little nook in the back. The trunk then gets wider. The box I plan on building would be same size as the current box for the folded port section, and then get wider for the general volume of the actual subs.

I'll do a little drawing here soon so I can give you guys a better idea of what I'm trying to accomplish. Lemme know what you guys think, yes? no? retarded idea?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Well, I know that the port size and length is calc'd thru the size of the box. But would it be a viable option to have it facing forward. I don't know if you've ever seen galamonkey's expedition with 4 18" BTL's before but hes got the ports facing forward on those. Then again, I guess he doesn't really have a choice, the whole trunk IS the box.

Hmm, never thought of that, thanks for the input, much appreciated. Anyways, I figured I may aswell post my 1st grade looking crayon-like MS paint picture.

Here's kinda what I had in mind... this is a top view of the trunk with the top of the picture facing the front of my car.

If your eyes didn't melt, lemme know what you think. If it's not a good idea, then I'll give some thought into the subs facing upward //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Definitely have subs up, try and have them under your rear deck holes and then block that area off as well, you could almost create some 'port walls' around your subs up to your rear deck where the holes are cut (obviously take out your speakers on your rear deck if you're going to do any of this)

Ok, well I whipped up a quick design in 3D... this design has the subs facing backwards and port forwards. It'd be easy to just have the subs facing up on the top piece of MDF, but its not shown in this rendering, because then you can't see the goods inside //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

anyways, see what ya think about this...

its a good use of trunk space, but once more, you really ought to have subs facing up, and then at least a wall separating the subs from the open area of the trunk, if not actually creating columns around them forcing the air out of rear deck holes like I said earlier

What do you mean, "wall separating subs from open area in the trunk" As in seal the port into the cabin? Or a wall behind the sub box from the remaining trunk space? I'm a bit confused.

Alright, here's the box rendered with the subs firing upwards (minus the top piece) and the ports going forwards.

If you would, could you explain what you meant a little more in depth about separating the subs and the trunk or cabin or something. I'm a tad bit confused. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

What he means is build your box as tight to the top / sides / bottom of your trunk as possible, and "seal it off"... if you want the box to be removable, just stuff blankets / towels in there until no air can make it back into your actual trunk... forcing all the air / sound waves from the subs and port into the cabin of the car, instead of resonating into the trunk area, and losing you some volume

I figured I'd put weather stripping around the the port exit, and butt it up against the back seat armrest hole. Then just having something hold the box in place so it doesn't move around and it keeps a tight seal against that port. So aslong as the port is sealed up against the back seat port, and the actual subs + trunk space is isolated, I'll be good right?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Man, screw all of that, make the box like above, but change the port design where you can mount the subs closer to the backseat, but still firing up. Then, go to the rear of the subs, and stand a piece of MDF up vertically to block the pressure from the rest of the trunk, make a semi-funnel to push air/pressure through the rear speaker holes. Very simple actually.

But I like my rear speakers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

This still is going to be a daily drive etc with back seat. The reason I want the port to come thru that hole is so I can have my back seats UP and still get all the bass with 4 comfortably seated people.
