question about ohms...and wich amp to get

JUSt bought 2 12" type-r's. Im pretty sure there 4omhs, but how do i tell?

anyway, i asked some questions on another forum, but the forum was way too slow.

Basically im trying to find a amp to power these. On the other forum everyone said to get the JL 1000/1

But if i just convert the subs to 1ohm then i can just get the JL 500\1 and push the subs just as hard right?

would it make it more dangerous to convert it to 1ohm??

i dont understand the logic to why subs are different ohms. if they were all 1ohms. then you could get half the size amp required to push them and it would be way cheaper..

Also should i get a ported box or sealed?

and if you can suggest a better quility sounding amp that has atleast 450rms ohms@4ohms for $550 or cheaper let me know/

well im hearing the type-r's crave power and can easily handle 1000rms watts each.

so im looking into getting something a bit stronger. im probably gonna buy from a local audio shop that way i can get a warranty.

whats the best amp out of planet audio, memphis, and crossfire amps? i can get a 5yr. warranty on any of those.

what makes the memphis better than planet audio??

my problem is theres 2 big audio shops where i live, one says "buy the memphis its way better than Planet Audio, the other shop sells Planet audio and says the memphis sucks, so im very confused. they both have a 5yr warranty so, not to worried about wich ones made better..

im leening twards the audio plnaet because it has alot lower distortion rating.

and is said to be a very clean sounding amp (wich is exactly what im looking for)

Grab a DMM and measure the voice coils. If it reads something like 3.X ohms on the DMM, then the voice coil(s) are 4ohm nominal.

"Convert" to 1ohm ?? Not following if you are talking about wiring both subs (assuming 4ohm coils) to 1ohm, or reconing the subwoofer so that each individual coil is 1ohm (the later of which is not possible with the Type-R, as they don't offer a dual 1ohm/coil option).

Different voice coils for different subwoofer designs. If all subs were 1ohm, then the designer would be MUCH more limited in the way in which they design the subwoofer itself.

That and there is no real superiority of a 1ohm coil. Power is cheap. Not hard to find an amp at just about any price point that provides the desired amount of power at the desired impedance (excluding the extremes that aren't required in most daily driving applications).

only reason a shop would say planet audio is better than memphis is because they dont carry memphis and they wanna sell you an amp, a planet audio amp.

memphis build quality IS better, if you ever hear someone say otherwise laugh in thier face. crossfire is right up there with memphis, good stuff. im more partial to memphis. you could find a memphis mojo 2000d around that price.

i garuntee you memphis has lower distortion and will souind waayyyyyyyyyy better than planet audio amps...for sure man. trust us. we live and breath this shit

what amp would you guys suggest? i was going to get a JL/1000 but I know these subs are way underrated and can easily handle 1000rms watts each. so i dont want to get a JL/1000 since it would only put out 500watts to each sub.

i want an amp that can ATLEAST put out 800rms watts per sub and is 1ohms stable..

My price range is $500-$650

and need an amp with atleast a 2yr warranty, as ive had trouble in the past with amps.

Just go buy Two Alpine M1005's and be done with it.

E-Bay is where I got mine for around 299.00 Each.

Run them at 2ohms you will have loades of RMS to feed them.

PS: The 2006 R's are just short of the X Series.
