Here is my take on the issue:
The quality of the mp3 will only be as good as what it is compressed to/with. It will sound the same on an Ipod or Zune or what ever you use for playback.
The most important thing you have to keep in mind is compression. As you will the stickies in the forums, compression is the real killer of sound and sound quality.
1. Get the most amout of storage you feel you need/can afford.
2. If you are using original CD titles, use a good compression program that wil variably compress the music. (This is critical for an mp3)
3.Go HERE to get the best sounding mp3's. I used this program to convert all of my CD's to mp3.
