question about imaging

i was pondering about a new setup for my front stage. right now i have factory 7" mids in the doors and 1" tweets in the a pillars. it sounds ok right now but when i upgrade i want good imaging capabilities and a good amount of spl... So what i'm wondering is would it be better to have 4" components in the kicks with 7" midbass in the doors, or 7" components in the doors and tweeters in the A pillars??? and yes they will be amped.

What exactly don't you like about it? Stage height? Depth? Width?

Out of the choices you listed, I like the three-way idea the best...run the tweets and mids in the kicks, and midbass in the doors.

for the dedicated midbasses i'm looking at the 7" dayton RS or tang band 6 1/2 sub... but if i run a 2-way then the AA polymids w/ a dayton RS tweeter...

oh also i have a 2000 eclipse.... i can't really measure the mounting dept cuz the baffle is angled but i don't mind using mdf rings. and the opening is 7"

I have had the best results with a 3 way setup . Mid bass in the doors ( the daytons work very well ). mids in the kicks , then play with tweeter positioning. Different cars produce different results . And unfortunately I haven't dealt with your particular car .

Tweets in the pillars ? and you want to raise the soundstage ? How are the tweets aimed currently ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the driver side tweet is aimed at the driver and the passanger tweet to the passanger...the midbass drivers are aimed towards the opposite seat. these are factory drivers connected to and external amp but whenever i upgrade i want to know if a 2 way or a 3 way will have better imaging capabilities

Can you adjust the tweeter aiming ? Bet that's a big part of your problem right there . With pillar mounting, you usually get better imaging off axis than on //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

thats good or do a 5-6 in propper kicks and you might not need the mid bass. just depends what you are after

i got some old pioneer 4" coaxials...i'll try them in the kick panels this weekend just for testing... i'll also try aiming the tweeters differently using the current 2 way setup.

if using the tweets in the a-pillars, its probably best to have the tweets pointing straight across from each other as that'll lessen the path length difference a little bit. but also requires the tweeter having a good off axis response.

edit: also with the driver side tweet pointing straight at you, the driver side must be much louder than the passenger side hence the stage is probably being towards the left side (which isn't good). so again i'd just point the tweets right at each other.
